Community Involvement

Why volunteer? People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop skills or build on existing experiences and knowledge:

Alex's Lemonade Stand logo

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope.  Northwestern Mutual, through the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, announced its new multi-year philanthropic program to fight pediatric cancer.  The financial services company has teamed up with two leading national nonprofit organizations focused on fighting childhood cancer and helping families, Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) and Starlight Children's Foundation™ (SCF). Through these partnerships, Northwestern Mutual will activate a range of programs and events in communities across the country.  To find more information about this amazing organization please visit:

Dakota Woodlands began as Mary’s Shelter, incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)3 human service organization on November 25, 1981, located in West St. Paul, MN.  Mary’s Shelter served single pregnant women 14 years and older (eventually 11 years and older) until 1993 when the Shelter was licensed to add residential care for single homeless women and homeless women with children.  In 1995 Mary’s Shelter discontinued maternity services and focused on their homeless programming. Also in 1995 Mary’s Shelter relocated to its present site in Eagan, MN and began making plans for renovation which was completed in 2000 when the Board of Directors decided to change the name to Dakota Woodlands.

In 2006, the mission discovered entire families living and working in the city dump overlooking the resort of Puerto Vallarta. Our work started, simply enough, by bringing water, food, and clothing. It named the dirt road at the base of the dump "Hope Road,” gave each home an address, and registered the children so they could go to school. Today, none of these “Familias de la Esperanza” (Families of Hope) live at the dump itself.

Our programs address those needs by emphasizing personal development, social interaction, independence and the security of knowing he or she is accepted and valued. People with special needs may participate in Vine Village through one of two programs: Residential and the Vine Village Day Program for the Arts and Agriculture.
